In assessing a deficiency in her estate tax returns, the Internal Revenue Service argued (successfully) that Virginia Andrews's name was a valuable commercial asset, the value of which should be included in her gross estate. Her novels were successful enough that following Andrews's death, her estate hired a ghost writer, Andrew Neiderman, to continue to write novels to be published under her name. Her best-known novel is the bestseller Flowers in the Attic (1979), a tale of four children smuggled into the attic of their wealthy estranged pious grandmother, and held prisoner there by their mother. Andrews, was an American novelist.Īndrews's novels combine Gothic horror and family saga, revolving around family secrets and forbidden love (frequently involving themes of horrific events, and sometimes including a rags-to-riches story). I just released book 2 of the The Dragon Flyers: City of Dragons.ĭavid is the main character in my dragon books. This series is for ages 7-12, but younger kids that enjoyed the picture book series will also enjoy having the books read to them. It continues the story and builds on the characters. My chapter book dragon series The Dragon Flyers grew out of the What Color is Your Dragon? series. The dragon picture books include a coloring page for children to color their own dragons! The stories are about imagination with vivid illustrations, moral lessons and strong values regarding love, friendship and making the right choices. The next two picture books ( What Color is Your Dragon? and The Moonlit Dragon) are a two-part dragon series about a boy named David and his dragon. It’s for the younger crowd (ages 2-6): a fun rhyming book about a little blue Volkswagon bug that speeds along and meets new friends. It would look for something in the lateral corridors, trying to attract our attention. It would stand up on its little hind legs, absolutely indifferent to the reward at the end of our experimental route disdaining the perks of Pavlovian conditioning, it would simply take one good look at us and then turn around, or turn to an unhurried exploration of the maze. When we’d put rats in a maze, there was always one whose behaviour would contradict the theory, who couldn’t have cared less about our clever hypotheses. Maybe that was why we were haunted by those ghosts. I still have dreams about the building where my classes were – its broad hallways that looked like they’d been carved into stone, smoothed down by people’s feet the worn edges of the stairs the handrails polished by people’s hands, traces imprinted in space. Ultimately it was a place that, despite reconstruction, still belonged to the dead. I never felt comfortable there between the new communist buildings and the wretched squares there was always a wind, and the frosty air was particularly bitter, stinging you in the face. That part of the city had been built up on the ruins of the ghetto, which you could tell if you took a good look – that whole neighbourhood stood about three feet higher than the rest of the town. My department was located in a building that had been the headquarters of an S.S. I studied psychology in a big, gloomy communist city. That idea conceived so many more that I painted with more to come. Staring off at the fire looking at its whimsical shapes of the flames and brilliant colors the fire popped, which sent a blunder embers way up into the air, so high they seemed to have blended in with the stars that were shining. There was no light pollution to be seen what so ever. The sky was being magnificent with the stars and the Milky Way. One evening, a long time ago, I was by the Hoosier National Forest with a group of friends. Having always loved being outdoors I would find myself around a campfire. It’s good…definitely not worthy of all the hype. Why does Percy have a bald spot? Bottom Line: Now I DID enjoy the writing style and I’m very much looking forward to reading another book by Carley Fortune but unfortunately this one just wasn’t my favorite.Īnd the cover art is weird. And I wasn’t even trying to predict anything! I HATE THAT SO MUCH. By chapter 2, I figured out the entire ending and I was spot on. Eh.Īnd my biggest issue with this book….IT. I found myself going back to the beginning of chapters to remind myself what decade we were in. Bouncing around through 12 years while simultaneously talking about the present just didn’t work for me. More storyline, more character development, more reasons to like Percy (I did not), more Sue, more EVERYTHING. I’m not sure what I’m missing here….so many people say they devoured this book in 1 sitting? I felt like nothing really happened within the first 2/3 of this book? It held my interest enough to keep reading but I just kept waiting for something….ANYTHING…to happen? I also just wanted MORE. There’s nothing not to like! I smiled, I cried, I felt alllll the emotions while reading. I was so excited when I finally DID manage myself a copy of this book! I bought it, I read it, and…Eh.
